Jeep Compass Advertised on TV but Not For Sale?

I’m not looking for a new vehicle but the 2007 Jeep Compass caught my eye when I saw it on TV. I’ve seen ads for this vehicle several times now. So today I decided that I’d stop by a Jeep dealer to take a closer look. To my surprise, I did not see it. Sold out perhaps? I went to another Jeep dealer in my area and I was still unable to find the Jeep Compass for sale.

If Jeep thinks it is a good idea to build buzz without having the product for sale, then they are wrong. The advertisements actually worked, meaning that they caught my attention at a time when I am not even interested. Even more amazing is the fact that I went to not one but two different dealers looking for the 2007 Jeep Compass. Shocking!

Instead of catching my attention and getting me to look at their new vehicle, Jeep has unsold me on their Compass. To make matters worse, I’m now posting something negative about the Jeep Compass. When people search for “Jeep Compass” it is entirely possible they’ll find this posting and they’ll think, if DaimlerChrysler can’t get their business together how can they properly assemble a vehicle?

What do you think that Dr. Z say to all of this? Well, I asked. I conducted a search “Jeep Compass” on the Dr. Z web site.

“The all-new 2007 Jeep Compass is slated to be released during the summer of 2006. Please stay connected with your local Jeep dealership and Jeep.com for the latest updates on this new model for Jeep.”

This is a terrible for two reasons. First, we’re pretty far into Summer 2006. This goes back to my main problem. Why would a company heavily promote a product it isn’t selling? If this is typical for automotive companies, this is insane. Second, I have absolutely no interest in being forced to repeatdely visit Jeep.com to learn more about the Jeep Compass. Why do I have to do this as a potential customer? Along these lines, I have no interest in building a relationship with a local car dealer. Why should they be in control of the situation? I don’t need their product, but they do need my money if they wish to stay in business.

I understand your point, but you don’t understand the car business. With new vehicles, that means hype, and lots of it. Another thing is distribution–new vehicles are always being touted as coming out in a certain season and are notoriously late (They don’t want you buying another vehicle in the meantime). Last, distribution depends on certain dealers and their locations; some get vehicles, some don’t at first. Anyways, everybody knows that when new vehicles come out they are scarce at first. Running ads on tv is no different than running a movie trailer months in advance. Besides, you should have researched ONLINE before heading to the dealer!

This vhicles buzz is a powerfull form of advertisment, its essential to a products successful launch. Throughout the history of man product launches there is always a buzz created prior to release. Many Cd’s with famous artists puposfully create music videos months prior to actually releasing their album in order to create this buzz and spark word of mouth advertising which is one of the most powerful methods of promotion. Sony’s Playstation and playstation 2 used the same princibles. In order to realize that the commercial is tailored for you but does not nessisarily have your name on it you have to look deeper into the reasons/benifits of promoting a product without actually having the product for sale. Im sure this multimillion dollar company would have a meathod to their madness. The commercial is pretty catchy though, but if i hadnt just bought a new car, i might be in the same boat as you are.I understand where you are coming from.

I totally agree with Nick. If there were no advertisments for this vehicle prior to it being launched, then people would not anticipate the vehicle. I think pre-launch advertisements are necessary for any forms of adverstisements or sales.
