Dell Latitude D610 Headphone Jack
I gave up an IBM ThinkPad T23 for a Dell Latitude D610.
The IBM was getting old and slow, but it was a rock solid machine. Very sturdy. On the other hand, the Dell is sleek and new. It looks sexy but it feels weak and flimsy. I swear it is going to break every time I touch it. Furthermore, I’m disgusted with the static I hear when I use the headphones. Apparently, this is a known issue.

“Unsatisifying” summarizes my entire experience with Dell (previous Inspiron laptop and current desktop). They seem to have achieved “just good enough” that keeps people coming back, but I’ve had it. I’m definitely not buying another one.

Funny how different people can have such different experiences. We’ve used Dell exclusively (averaging probably about $100K per year, between desktops, laptops and servers) for over 5 years now, with next to no problems. The laptops take a banging from the road warriors, but we get the extended warranties and they take care of everything. I’ve had a Latititude D800 for about a year now, and even with some pretty rough treatment it’s been trouble free. I always recommend Dells when people ask me what to buy.

I moved from a IBM laptop to HP at home. For most part I love the HP notebook and it feels sturdy too. Recently I got a Dell D610 at work…looks flimsy but now I’ve strated to believe that it is solid too.

I use a Dell laptop my self - a D600 I got from work. Even though it hasn’t physically breaked yet I admit that I share your fear. I looks and feels pretty weak as if it is going to fall apart on me. The Bluetooth seems to have a habit of breaking though. I have now had it replaced 3 times within a 1½ year period.
