Classic WebWord

I added a new category (”Classic WebWord”) and some new links to the right hand navigation:

WebWord Reports
Moving WebWord
WebWord Interviews

The good news is that this provides quick and easy access to some of my old content. People have asked about this stuff so I’m providing it. The bad news is that the formatting is terrible, many links are broke, the visual design doesn’t match WebWord now, and so on. It is a usability train wreck and I’m not sure when it’ll get back on the tracks.

Enjoy!

p.s. I’m thinking about kick starting my old WebWord newsletter again. I’m pretty sure that I still have a list of several thousand readers. Maybe it is time for more publishing magic.

While you’re making changes to the site, how about some of the changes that should be obvious given the subject matter at hand? Personally, I feel there are some serious usability issues with it, which is a bit ironic. Note that I’m a fan of this site, so please take my comments in the spirit in which they are intended.

The first point I would make is that I would have sent you a personal rather than a public comment previous to this, but there’s no obvious link for doing that. Down at the bottom of the page, where you would find an e-mail link on most sites, we instead have just “WebWord is proudly powered by WordPress / Entries (RSS) and Comments (RSS).”

Next, even though I visit this site regularly, I still have to think twice how to read a whole article. I look for a link, and the only thing that looks like it could be such a link (i.e. it’s blue) is the category, and that link is actually broken (”Error 404″). The actual link, as we now know is the article’s title, but the title gives no visual indication at all that it might be a link unless one happens to roll the mouse over it. Perhaps, a little CSS tweaking is in order?

Have you been reading Neilsen, too?

I hadn’t been reading Neilsen except for a link or 2 from here, but since you mentioned it, I went and browed around. Mostly, I find it a really mixed bag. Some great stuff mixed in with a lot of self-aggrandisement, exaggerated findings, and selective use of statistics.

On point, though, I see that Non-Standard Links was the #2 biggest user complaint in 2005 [http://www.useit.com/alertbox/designmistakes.html].

I was actually directing my comment at author of this post, but I agree with you that it’s a mixed bag. Check out my blog (click on my name) for a rundown of how I feel about his article about blog usability. I’d include the link here, but everytime I try to add a link here, my post gets flagged as spam.
