Environment is Everything

I don’t like snakes. When I see them in the wild, I avoid them or try to scare them away. Or, I run away and cry like a little girl. (Or boy. You get the point.)

While I don’t like snakes when I see them au naturel, I really don’t like them in my house. This weekend we did battle with a snake: In. The. House. Bah!!

A snake outside is a nuisance. However, inside my home, under the bathroom sliding door, that same snake is a monster. A devil, a demon, a monster.

That’s context. That’s environment.

p.s. Cats will find and attack snakes!

p.p.s. I scared the bejeezus out of the snake with a coat hanger and wasp killing spray, then I placed a dry rag on top of wet rags to draw the snake out. It was a little snake hut to tempt him. Carrot and stick. It worked. He came out, he was grabbed, and he was thrown into the snow. Not sure about his present location or state of mind.

Very commedable for not just beating him to death as most people probably would. I find that learning exactly what the dangerous snakes in my area look like can be very comforting. Then I know for sure when I see a snake that won’t hurt me. Granted, you may still have a panic reaction when you see one, but at least you’ll know deep in your analytic brain that you’re not in danger.

hey, I dealt with my snake next to the tub in my bathroom by putting on protective clothing (motorcycle helmet, leather jacket & gloves), and grabbing it behind the head with a death grip, then taking it outside in the yard. I later found out it was a harmless garter snake, but I didn;t know! I just didn’t want to kill it nor did I want it to squirt poisonous snake venom at me!

hello, i dont like what you did at all. Snakes are great creatures. They are peaceful animals and wont ever try to bite you if you respect them. I have owned and handled a number of snakes, constrictors, poisonous ones the lot. All you have to do is keep your distance and offer an exit and they would quite happily leave without any trouble. If you agitate or threaten the poor snake then it will most likely try and defend itself. Which i find rather respectable. Just like you they are afraid, they are not evil or demons. They do not know who you are and what you are going to do to them, so who blames them for wanting to keep themselves safe. They are more frightened of you than you are of them. So if you are unexperienced with snakes here are a few tips:
If there is a snake outside on your premesis:
leave it alone! keep your distance, go inside and bring all your animals inside until it has gone (to avoid anyone ore anything, snake included to get hurt) (especially if there are known to be poisonous snakes in your area.) if you know it is poisonous and anyone is in danger call the fire brigade and they will remove it for you)
If there is a snake inside:
leave the doors open. offer it a safe an stress free exit.
If you know its is not poisonous; try and get quite a long stick preferably twice your arm length and gently guide it out. DO NOT SPRAY IT WITH WASP SPRAY. THIS IS SAD! THE SNAKE DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE TREATED LIKE THIS!
if you know it is poisonous ar are not sure:call the fire station and they will have experience at removing it from your home with minimum harm to the snake.
Note: please do not hurt the snake purposfully they are only shy and stubborn and want to be left alone. They are often only looking for a sanctuary to keep themselves safe. They do not go out wanting to bite or hurt anyone unless they are potential prey items (rabbits, rodents etc)

IF YOU LIVE IN AN AREA WHERE DANGEROUS SNAKES ARE COMMON OR EXIST KEEP YOUR DISTANCE AT ALL COSTS! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE IT! GET HELP FROM SOMEONE WHO IS EXPERIANCED LIKE STEVE IRWIN!

I am thrilled that someone loves snakes. I know a million people who wishes you had all of them. However making them sound harmless is ridiculous. I know someone who was bitten and died and did nothing to excite the snake. They are deadly. If any good comes from them the bad does outway it. I am an animal lover but don’t consider a snake anything other than a vulture just waiting for someone to strike. Making a snake sound like a pet is just plain crazy. To many people have been killed by them.

I’ve got a friend who used to be a game ranger, and the other day we had a snake come into the house. I couldn’t believe his excitement – he like let it crawl around a little and spoke to us about it. Then, he picked it up (yes, with his bear hands) and showed us (and, all the excited and screaming kids) how the snake hadn’t eaten for a while, that it was a female etc. He then put it into a pillow case for further evaluation, and then once he was done he sent it back into the wild.

Wow! I remembered when I found a house snake under my closet inside one of the shoeboxes. Before I could run away it has already bitten me. It hurt a little and mom had to wipe all the venom off by rubbing garlic on the bitten area. Since then on, I despise snake.
