What Katrina Will Cost You
U.S. Citizens: 297,110,111
Katrina Hurrican Relief: $51.8 billion to $200 billion
Therefore, it is going to cost every man, woman and child between $174.35 and $673.67. Furthermore, it is going to cost insurance companies $25 billion or more. Those costs are passed along to you, of course, in the form of higher premiums. They might lose money this year, but they’ll make it up in the future.
And don’t forget, we’re getting near the end of oil. Katrina hasn’t helped us there. If you thought heating and cooling your home was expensive last year, well, it is only going to get worse.
The costs above are merely the hard costs. There are also human costs, and the pain will be passed around the nation as people migrate, recover, and rebuild. Perhaps more importantly, the United States has (again) lost credibility in the world. “They can’t even take care of their own people?”
