Action Not Words

I’ve been trying to inject usability into the podcasting community. Most people are talking about about features and functions, and I have tried to remind people about usability issues. If you’ve spent any time at WebWord you know that I’ve already written two articles on these issues:

Audio Content and Podcast Usability
Podcast File Name Usability

The truth is, I care. I’m seeing some great technology but I want it to be easier to use. I want it to spread. I want it to grow. So, I’m throwing usability at it.

But I think I have failed. My articles and my comments are missing the mark. I feel like I am acting like a know-it-all. That’s not my intent, but that is how I think I might look.

Garrick Van Buren sent me a note today telling me to “come down from the cathedral of usability and join us in the bazaar” in response to a posting I made in the ipodder-dev group on Yahoo. He’s right. I think in order to make a difference I need to take action, not just post comments and write articles. I’m going to try harder to do that. I want to add value and doing something in this case is far more valuable than saying something.

By the way, Garrick Van Buren’s blog is worth visiting. Good stuff. Seems to be a mix of usability, marketing, and technology.
