Open Source Versus Capitalism: Part One
Oristus — “Open source is not open source software, and open source is not an organization. Open source is a model and we should treat it as such. Further, as an economic model, it competes with capitalism.”

John,
I used to respect your opinions, but now I see you are using this space for blatent marketing sillyness.
You definition of the “open source” model and comparison with capitalism is totally wrong. You state that captialism hinges on privtate property.
Open source is based sharing information, but does not deny ownership.
You say that capitalism is defined by the free market setting of prices.
Open source makes no claim to the price of information. It allows free sharing, but does not disallow the sale of information for any price someone is willing to pay.
I really don’t see how you can make these claims or what it has to do with usability consulting. You have lost a reader. I can get reliable useful information from many sources.

1. Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it.
2. I’m not sure what you mean by “blatent marketing sillyness” since I’m not really pushing, promoting, or selling anything directly through the article. The only marketing comes at the end of the article where I give people the opportunity to subscribe to the Oristus newsletter.
3. Open source is definitely based on sharing, however, I would argue that the ownership is very limited. Ownership in the open source model is much more about group ownership than individual (or organizational) ownership. Therefore, I would have to disagree with you. Please provide more details and I would be happy to respond.
4. Both capitalism and open source, as models, employ the power of free markets, not just to set prices but to determine value. Price and value are not the same thing. In any event, I’m not saying that open source prevents the sale of information (or anything else). If you read that part of the article again, I never make that claim. Regarding making money in the open source system, well, that is the topic of another article.
5. I’m sorry that I lost you as a reader. I don’t always talk about usability on WebWord and Oristus. Unfortunately, if you stuck around, you would find out that I will talk a LOT about usability in the follow up article. One main reason to write this article is to set up the next article about the value of usability in open source. Too bad you are going to miss it!
