Dude, Where’s My Luggage?
Delta To Track Luggage With RFID
“Misrouted baggage costs Delta about $100 million per year, but airline officials say they believe RFID technology could cut those costs significantly. “We’ll be able to provide a much more proactive response” to lost baggage, a Delta spokesman says. As a result, Delta could save money by reducing the need to hire expensive couriers to deliver delayed bags to customers.”
Now your conversations with the Delta representative will go like this:
You: My bags aren’t in the luggage area and I was there when they started unloading.
Rep: Well, actually thanks to this great new technology that allowed us to also lay off 7% of our workforce, I can tell you exactly where your luggage is.
You: Wow! Great! I mean great about the luggage part. So where is my luggage?
Rep: Your luggage is in Caracas.
You: Okay… but this is Baltimore.
Rep: Well, it looks like your luggage is going to have a better vacation than you are.

Aren’t there privacy concerns here too?

Like what (not a rhetorical question)?
My guess is that privacy only becomes an issue when its loss outweighs customer convenience.
