Simple passwords no longer suffice

That’s the real issue. The core. Usability and security are sworn enemies. Solve this problem and you’ll make a lot people happy, and you’ll make a lot of money.

I totally disagree. You can have usable security measures.
If you define usable as properly managing users expectations, I think we all accept that there are time when there needs to be security, but the important thing is to make this process as easy as possible.
Security and usability only clash when tech overwhelms the user experience and common sense.
