Americans Don’t Understand That Their Heritage Is Itself a Threat (NY Times) -- "In short, the British gratuitously destroyed important structures in Washington (and killed many innocent people) because those buildings were obnoxious symbols of American values whose spread and propagation the London government feared would spell the disempowerment of their own." (Comments: Interesting article written by Caleb Carr about the War of 1812.)

Not surprisingly, you get a different view of the War of 1812 taught in Canadian schools than you do in the USA.

The War of 1812 was seen here not as a war against American values, but as a defense against the intended forced annexation by the Americans of the still-loyal English colonies to the north.

The USA has its folklore of Paul Revere riding along proclaiming "The Redcoats are coming! The Redcoats are coming!" Canada has its tales of Laura Secord and her warnings of the invading Americans.

You just don't have Paul Revere choclate shops.
