Are online communities working? (Gerry McGovern via LucDesk) -- "Around 1995/96, it was believed by many, including myself, that online (virtual) communities were going to have a radical impact on the way people socialized and did business. Five years on, there are lots of these ‘communities.’ However, few have figured out how to make any money out of them, and their impact has remained marginal." (Comments: I totally agree. Good article.)

The web is not about money, nor are communities. I belong to a communitiy that is a very big part of my life, to say that it's effect is marginial is a silly statement.
To try to make money off of one, I think it could be done...if the goal wasn't to make money but to provide a place for like-minded people to meet.
