ITEM #1

Removal of a Banner Ad from WebWord.com

As I promised, a banner has been removed from a page
<http://www.WebWord.com/interviews/reimer.html>. With
your help we have added 100 subscribers!

For every 100 new subscribers to this Newsletter, I'll
remove a banner ad from a page on the WebWord.com site.
This means even faster download times.

Telling others about WebWord.com is easy. You can use
this Web page <http://webword.com/cgi-bin/birdcast.cgi>,
or you can simply tell your friends to subscribe to
the newsletter <http://webword.listbot.com>.

Once again, thank for your support.

ITEM #2

A Bigger Monitor is NOT Better?

I recently spoke with Dr. Gary J. Williams about the
interview I conducted with him several months ago about
computer users and their vision. He had some interesting
news about patients he has seen recently that have bought
newer, bigger monitors.

These new screens are causing some major problems! It seems
that folks get bigger monitors to help, but this gets them
even closer to the screen (the monitor is larger and thus
sticks out more). This actually adds stress to your vision.
Also, the height of the screen is raised and your eyes dry
faster since less of your eyelid is covering your eye.

The solution? Be sure that the monitor is placed farther
away. And, be sure that your workstation is properly
adjusted. The bottom line is that simply getting a bigger
monitor can harm, rather than help your eyes if you don’t
adjust things properly.

ITEM #3

Gathering Usability Data About Merchants

You want good support after the sale. So, before you
purchase any durable good (particularly via the Web),
use this simple usability test. Call the manufacturer's
toll-free help line. If you can't get through, if you
face hostility, or if you get put on hold for a long
time, you probably don't want to deal with that company.

Job Posting of Interest

Beverly Gault contacted me about a position at the Studio
Archetype/ Atlanta, GA office. They are currently seeking
an Information Design Director. If you are not familiar
with Studio Archetype, then you can view their our web site
<http://www.studioarchetype.com>. You can also call
404-439-4000.

ITEM #5

Protect Your Eyes

Eye-related health care and glasses for problems
related to video display terminal (VDT) use costs
Americans nearly $2 billion each year, according to a
California-based VDT-and-vision expert.

ITEM #6

New WebWord.com Logo

I want a new graphical logo for WebWord.com. As you can
see on the WebWord.com homepage <http://webword.com>,
the current logo is two green W's, and two arrows. I like
general idea (and I want to keep the green color), but the
current logo is not really professional.

So, I am going to have a contest. I'm looking for a new
logo. If you create the logo that I like and that I use,
I'll give you free exposure in this newsletter and on
the WebWord.com site. Submit your entry (or entries) to
<john@webword.com>.

Recommended Book

"Cost-Justifying Usability" by Randolph Bias and Deborah Mayhew
<http://amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0120958104/wedwordcom>

This is a book almost anyone can use. It helps you
understand the costs and benefits of usability and it
also provides you with dollars-and-cents ammo to
throw at accounting and management. This book is helpful
for people that are struggling to see the usefulness of
usability.

This is a very solid book, I highly recommend it.
